Choosing an Event to Cover

The first step in creating a field report is selecting an event to cover. A sports game, such as football, basketball, volleyball, etc., might be a good starting point. You may also want to consider events and activities organized by clubs or classrooms on campus. Once you have chosen your event, gather information for your coverage. Identify the organizers or coaches, the event participants or players, and the anticipated attendees. Also, make note of the date and time of the event to schedule the camera crew and reporter's attendance.

Writing a Script

Scriptwriting for the reporter's stand-ups and interview questions will help students stay organized in the field. Additionally, creating a list of shots for B-roll to capture the full experience of the event will contribute to a more comprehensive field report.

For the script, a simple four-part format can be used:

  1. Introduction: The reporter informs viewers of their identity, the location of the report, and the event they are covering. For example: "This is Claire reporting from the Century High School Football stadium for the homecoming game."
  2. Event Summary: Provide a brief description of what viewers will see and experience at the event. Include detailed shots for B-roll that are essential for capturing moments and conveying the atmosphere of the event.
  3. Interviews: Prepare interview questions. The reporter will interview students, fans, organizers, etc., at the event. For a football game, the reporter could interview players, coaches, and fans. The goal is to offer viewers a perspective from people at the event, which is challenging to achieve solely from the newsroom. A concise interview will typically consist of two to three questions.
  4. Closing: The reporter summarizes what they learned at the event and transitions the segment back to the news anchors in the studio. For example: "As you can see, we have some excited fans, another win for the Century High School Bulldogs! This is Claire reporting from the Homecoming football game. Back to you in the studio."
