Text & image: What is B-Roll?

My courses

The next step to enhance the quality of your news productions is through B-roll video clips. What is B-Roll? It can be difficult to define. It can be a video clip of anything and everything—any shot of people, objects, or locations that are not of your News Anchors or Reporters speaking to the camera can be considered B-Roll for your News Show. However, defining B-Roll with some more detail will give you a better idea of when to use it and how to capture good quality B-Roll.

Without images or shots that show what the talent is talking about, it can be hard to communicate a news story to your audience and keep a segment interesting. This is where B-Roll comes into your production. With shots of the news story's subject and location, you can ensure that your news reports are both easy to understand and able to captivate your audience.

Shooting B-Roll, editing, finding the right export format, and playing the video clips into the production will take time to master. It will also help students become Innovative Designers after using a variety of video equipment to create and produce B-roll and integrating it into the show.
