The HS-1400 is a five-channel HD portable video switcher that also incorporates camera control, recording, and live streaming capabilities. Let's begin with a physical overview of the unit.
Starting with the rear panel.
On the video side, inputs consist of four 3G-SDI inputs and four HDMI inputs, with HDMI 1 and 2 supporting 4K signal input. Outputs include one SDI, three HDMI, and one USB Type-C. The center and right HDMI outputs are fixed to PGM output only, while the left HDMI and SDI outputs allow you to freely select the output content.
On the audio side, there are two XLR inputs and one pair of RCA input.
For camera control, there are four RS-232/422 ports and one DVIP interface. Camera connection methods will be covered in a subsequent tutorial video.
The USB Type-A port supports connection of external storage devices, providing video or static image content as the signal source for the fifth input channel, Media.
Rounding out the rear panel are the Tally output, power switch, and DC IN.
Moving to the front panel — at first glance, the large number of buttons may appear complex, but they can be grouped into four sections: switcher control, camera control, audio control, and recording and streaming control. Breaking each of these four sections down further into smaller functional blocks makes the layout straightforward to understand.
Starting with the switcher control section. Looking at the area with the highest density of buttons in the center, it can be divided into the following zones: the Menu zone for navigating the on-screen menu; the Transition zone for selecting the transition style; the Keyer zone for controlling Chroma Key, Luma Key, and PIP; the Downstream key zone for controlling the Logo and Downstream key layers; and the User zone for quickly recalling user memories. Below these is the channel selection section for PGM and PVW. To the left are the T-bar, FTB key, the Auto key for Mix/Wipe/DIP transitions, and the Cut key. The buttons in the upper right corner handle the HS-1400's display mode, the built-in speaker volume, and Media Source selection and playback. On the left side are the monitor headphone volume knob and mute button. This covers the switcher control section of the front panel.
Moving on to the camera control section. Breaking down the area with the highest button density — at the top is the White Balance/Gain/Shutter section, where the knobs are used for manual value adjustment and the buttons toggle automatic mode and reset respectively.
In the Camera Select section, the top row of four buttons selects the camera to be operated. The bottom row contains the camera power on/off switch, OSD toggle, and Preset save and delete buttons. Below this are the Pan, Tilt, and Zoom speed options and the control lock key.
On the right side, Auto Tracking provides the camera's auto-tracking on/off toggle and framing composition options. The printed numbers and letters below these buttons indicate that these buttons also have additional functions., which will be explained in detail in the camera control and menu tutorial videos.
The two standalone buttons on the left control focus and iris. The rocker switch below controls Zoom. This covers the camera control section of the front panel.
Moving to the Audio Mixer section — the three controls on the left manage the volume levels for the XLR and RCA inputs on the rear panel. The controls on the right manage the input volume for Inputs 1 through 4 and the PGM output volume.
Looking above to the recording and streaming control section — the Bitrate area offers separate high, medium, and low options for recording and streaming respectively. Record starts and stops recording; recorded files can be saved to either an SD card or an external USB storage device. Stream starts and stops the live stream; the streaming destination must be configured in the Web UI.
Finally, don't overlook the 6.3mm headphone monitoring jack located on the side of the unit.
This concludes the physical overview of the HS-1400.
